Cardio Training For Fat Loss – Should I Do It BEFORE or AFTER My Weight Training For Best Results?
Training for fat loss is not easy and cheap endurance training is an important part of the process. But if you do your cardio at the wrong time, could you shoot yourself in the foot! Find out the best time to do it and why.
When it comes to fat loss, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is, is “to maximize fat loss, I do, my heart before or after my weight training?”
I know there are times when I will be kept in suspense, as …
But I’m not going to do that here …
Physiologically considered, when maximum fat burning is your goal and you want to incorporate cardio into your workout, you are better off doing your cardio immediately after your workout.
Here’s why:
1st When you do strength training first, you have more energy and strength for strength training.
I know, cardio junkies will not want to hear it, but intense, QUALITY weight training is actually more effective for fat loss than endurance training. Why the emphasis on quality? Well, if you go to the gym and just flail around with light weights for 30 minutes, it really is not very effective for fat loss.
However, if you are really into something hard and train hard, the metabolic boost you get from weight training (in terms of not only calories burned, but here the increase in metabolism after and the increase in muscle mass you get from weight training) is greater than the lift you get from endurance training. So, by your weight training FIRST, while you are fresh, then you will have more energy to put into it and you will be stronger. This increases the metabolic and muscle mass stimulation and therefore overall fat loss. It is a win-win situation!

2nd Performing weight training first from the available blood sugar and brings the body into “fat burning” mode.
If you train with weights, you are implementing short, intense muscle contractions. Glucose (blood sugar) is the preferred fuel for driving these intense contractions. As you go through your training, your body gradually consumes its readily available supply of sugar and fat mobilization for energy production begins.
Here is the key … mobilize body fat for energy is a process that takes time. If you do your heart first, your body will first work on that blood sugar before they started on the body fat. Until you move with cardio and the weights are done, that is, if you are in the optimal fat burning mode.
But the problem is, fat is not an efficient fuel for weight training. This cardio first, you use all the “good” things for strength training and force your body to get with a less efficient source of energy. Your weight is to decrease in the quality of your workouts and cardio efforts will not be as effective for achieving fat-burning that your primary goal is!
So basically you are shooting themselves in the foot twice!
Think of your body as a hybrid gas-electric car. This vehicle uses gas supply more power for acceleration and power on the long-term power for maintaining speed must.
Now think of blood sugar as gas and weight training as a powerful acceleration. When you press the pedal (performing weight training), you will get much better acceleration when you with the right fuel (ie gas).
