Defining Hypnosis And The Best Definition of Hypnosis
One of the most contentious issues in the field of hypnosis is actually an attempt to define what hypnosis really is. What really is? How do we tell people what it is?
Some have argued about, fought over, discussed, debated and still no one really has created a complete ‘nice-upon-definition of hypnosis – some might argue that it is virtually impossible to define as an untouchable subject. Here is an attempt to distinguish between different meanings of the word “hypnosis” and related concepts according to many different people in and related to the field of hypnosis:
Dictionary definition (s)
Hypnosis. 1) hypnotic trance, an altered state of consciousness (‘trance’) in which unconscious or dissociated responses to suggestion are enhanced in quality and increase in the degree (“hyper-suggestibility). 2) hypnotic induction (‘ hypnogenesis “), the process by which hypnotic trance is induced in the operator (‘auto-’o’ auto-hypnosis”) or other (“hetero-hypnosis). 3) Hypnotism, the field of study covering , among other things, the hypnotic trance, his induction, management and enforcement, and related topics, such as the phenomena of “waking suggestion of natural origin (” hypnoidal ‘) states of trance. (That is, Abbrv. Of ‘neuro-hypnotism “sleep of the nervous system.”)
Then later, the term “Hypnotherapy” is described as the use of therapeutic techniques or principles in relation to hypnosis.
I would say that is important for any person to make sure to distinguish between hypnosis and hypnotherapy as well as the role of hypnotist and hypnotherapist.
I have to be honest, I think the dictionary definition of a certain lack of understanding and depth, but hell, who have one or two words to respond to others as well, right? They can be forgiven.
So here goes with a load of definitions and discussions of what hypnosis is really … First up, the man himself, hypnosis Scottish common sense man, James Braid:
He is the man who first coined the term “hypnosis” by what has some great authority and credibility in this debate, in my opinion. Although I have seen people in discussion forums, including hypnosis argue against this idea!
Despite being introduced to the field watching a hypnotist perform a show, James Braid wanted to replace the theory of mesemerists supernatural. Braid offered a real scientific explanation, measurement-based care and observation, and pioneered the ready acceptance of medical hypnosis. Braid actually coined the term “Neuro-hypnotism,” which he abbreviated to ‘Hypnotism’:
“… A particular state of the nervous system induced by a fixed and abstracted attention to mental and visual eye, an object, not an exciting nature.” [Braid, 1843 Neurypnology]
Braid then revised his idea that hypnosis was a specific neurological state and replaced it with the theory that hypnosis was “monoideism,” the fixing of consciousness in a single idea or object (and us as eye fixation induction result):
“The true origin and essence of the hypnotic condition is the induction of a habit of abstraction or mental concentration, which, as in a dream or spontaneous abstraction, the powers of the mind are so engrossed with one idea or line of thought, for the moment, make the individual unconscious, or conscious indifference, all other ideas, impressions, or trains of thought. ” Braid [1852: 53-54]
Hippolyte Bernheim: One of the great pioneers at the beginning of the hypnosis. Professor Bernheim not only had a very cool name, also was an important figure in the history of French psychology and is credited with popularizing the view that hypnosis is fundamentally both a state of high suggestibility and induced by suggestion. He also refuted the people connection between hypnosis and sleep:
“To define hypnotism as driven by the dream is too narrow to make sense of the word, ignore the suggestion of many phenomena that may occur independently of sleep. I define hypnotism as the induction of a peculiar psychical condition which increases susceptibility to suggestion. It is often true, the dream that can induce facilitates suggestion, but it is not necessary preliminary.’s suggestion that hypnotism rules.
I tried to show that the dream suggests anything different in natural sleep. The same phenomenon of suggestion can be obtained from natural sleep, if one is successful in putting oneself in relationship [] relationship with the person who sleeps without waking.
This new idea to propose on the hypnotic influence, this wider definition given to the word hypnosis, we can include in the same class of phenomena all the different methods that operate on the imagination, provoke the psychic condition of high susceptibility to [suggestion] hyper-suggestibility with and without sleep. Ormond McGill may have been a stage hypnotist Wiley, but still very influential and much loved in the hypnosis world until he died quite recently. He said: “
“Basically, hypnosis can be considered as a state of mind produced by the transfer from one level of consciousness to another, a state with the mental capacity to clear its own key directly to the autonomic nervous system rather than the sympathetic (nervous system central) productive mood of sleepwalking, or unconscious behavior. “[The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism 1996: p. 12]

The Book of the United Kingdom of Statues: Now here’s one of those things that started me …. insurance This is the official legal definition of “hypnosis” provided by the Hypnotism Act 1952, however, I would like to point out what makes no sense and I think this garbage is what I think is very misleading because it implies Hypnosis is a state of “sleep.”
This is a step backwards and did not examine the findings of medical researchers as Bernheim and Freud, even. Very annoying way of marrying up mesmerism, hypnosis, and compared with the phenomena that has very little to do with hypnosis. This definition, as stated in the Law of hypnotism, is still standing in British law:
“Hypnotism” includes hypnotism, magnetism and any similar act or process which produces or is intended to produce in any person any form of induced sleep or trance in which susceptibility of the mind of that person to suggestion or direction is increased or intended to be increased, but does not include hypnotism, magnetism, or any similar act or process that is self-induced. [The Hypnotism Act, 1952]
The British Medical Association (BMA): Realizing the futility of the above definition, the British Medical Association wisely decided to offer its own definition, in response to the Law of hypnotism.
This definition focuses on the psychological and physiological changes measurable in hypnosis. Note well that substitutes deliberate attention altered “by the misleading expression induced sleep ‘used by the Statute Book. Although phrased in medical parlance, this is a considerable improvement in my opinion:
“A temporary condition of altered attention on a topic that can be induced by another person and in which a variety of phenomena can occur spontaneously or in response to stimuli, verbal or otherwise. These phenomena include alterations in consciousness and memory , increased susceptibility to suggestion, and production in the subject of responses and ideas unfamiliar to him in his usual state of mind. On the other hand, phenomena such as anesthesia, paralysis and muscle stiffness and vasomotor changes can be produced and disposed of in the hypnotic state. ” [BMA, "Medical use of hypnotism", 1955]

Dave Elman: One of the most respected figures in the history of clinical hypnotherapy. Many refer to his book “Hypnotherapy” as an essential tool for any therapist.
He pioneered the use of rapid induction techniques and was a strong supporter of hypno-analytic approach to therapy. His work is characterized by a common sense approach. He believed that only medical professionals should use hypnosis and much of his work was directed to the medical community:
“Hypnosis is a state of mind which overlooks the critical capacity of human beings, and selective thinking established.” [Dave Elman, Hypnotherapy, 1964: 26]
A man whose work actually something like, Stephen Gilligan, states:
“Hypnosis is conceptualized as a sequence of interaction absorb experientially that produces an altered state of consciousness in which freedom of expression begin to happen automatically, without conscious mediation.” (Gilligan, Stephen G., therapeutic trances, 1987)
Finally then I will give this set some of Dr. Milton H. Erickson himself …
In The Collected Papers of Milton H. Erickson, Volume I, page 113, Erickson is quoted as saying:
“The hypnotic state is an experience that belongs to the subject derives from itself and the memories accumulated learning of the subject, not necessarily consciously recognized, but possible on the demonstrations in a special state of waking consciousness no.”
And one of my favorite explanations can be found in The Collected Papers of Milton H. Erickson, volume IV in the series, page 224,
“It’s a state of consciousness – not unconsciousness or sleep – a state of consciousness or awareness in which there is a marked responsiveness to the ideas and understandings and a greater willingness to respond positively or negatively to the ideas. The result of the processes and operation in the field. And it is a simple procedure of mysticism, but rather a systematic use of the learning experience’s, that is, learning acquired through the extensive process of life itself. ”
For those who prefer something easy to remember, “Experiencing Hypnosis”, pp. 187, 1981, Erickson so eloquently says:
“All hypnosis is, is a loss of multiple foci of attention.”
Check it out! I think that is the definition of hypnosis hypnotic ever! There are many, many more definitions, ideas, notions, etc … These are some that stand out for me ….< p>

Engage in something you truly believe in something that involves and you think it’s bigger than you (spirituality, charity, kindness towards others). It will give you a sense of purpose and make life meaningful. Treat today as if it were your last and do not let the precious moments of life slip through your fingers.
6) Assume “Perspective” Big Picture:
When you encounter a situation that is stressful (but not tragic), a step back and ask if the larger system in your life that is really important. Evaluate whether it is worth your emotional investment and over time if the situation will pass or not critical. Track Your priorities and examine ways to use trying circumstances as an opportunity for growth.
7) Invest in relationships:
Positive Psychology research has shown that the development of close relationships is the most important component for happiness. time to invest in the development of meaningful bonds with your family and friends. Do not focus on having satisfied your needs and focus energies on the needs of the people you care most. The more you put into your love relationships will receive more in return.
Perhaps more importantly, greater joy and positive growth produces benefits beyond simply feeling good.? It ‘been proven to extend the intellectual, physical and social resources. Happy people have better health habits, lower blood pressure and stronger immune system, which eventually lead to live longer. Moreover, the experience more satisfying relationships, higher levels of self-esteem, manage stress more effectively, a greater sense of purpose and greater clarity and optimism that can meet the targets.
